At RJM Multi Trade we understand the importance of energy-efficiency. While we need our boilers for heat and hot water, it’s more important than ever to be mindful about how we use energy in our homes. There is a global energy crisis, so by ensuring your boiler is as energy-efficient as possible you can do your bit in trying to help limit the damage.
Below we explain what to look out for when boiler shopping, and the differences between boiler types and their efficiency, we'd like to make the following point:
Whichever boiler you choose...
It’s important to focus on both energy-efficiency and the type of boiler that meets your needs. The most important thing is opting for a boiler which is condensing and A-rated for efficiency.
We’d also recommend checking if the boiler is considering is endorsed by the Energy Saving Trust (EST).
What boiler types are efficient with energy?
Combi boilers and efficiency
Combi boilers are a very energy-efficient option if you live in a small to medium sized house and only have one bathroom. They only heat water as and when you need it, and this avoids any excess water being heated and wasted. Combi boilers work as an all-in-one unit so there’s no water tank or hot water cylinder.
System boilers and efficiency
System boilers can also be energy-efficient although less so in the sense that you need to heat water in advance, which then sits in a hot water cylinder. If you heat too much and don’t use it, it will go to waste. However, they’re as efficient as combi boilers in the fact they also recycle energy so long as they are A-rated and condensing. A system or regular boiler is likely to be your best bet if you live in a home with more than one bathroom and use a lot of hot water.
Regular boilers can also potentially risk waste because the water is heated in advance and stored in a cylinder. However, a regular boiler can still work efficiently if it’s A-rated and condensing, and you are careful about how you use it and how long you leave your hot water switched on for.
